Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has issued a statement holding the Islamic Republic responsible for the circumstances that led to the death of Kianoush Sanjari, a young journalist and civil activist.
The organization emphasized that even outside of prison, Sanjari was not safe from the continuous harassment and threats by Iranian authorities.
The statement noted that the torture he endured during his time in prison and ongoing threats had severely deteriorated his health.
Jonathan Dagher, head of the Middle East desk at RSF, described Sanjari’s death as a “preventable tragedy” and called for an independent investigation into the matter.
RSF further highlighted that the Islamic Republic has created a perilous environment for journalists, making the country one of the most dangerous places for media professionals.
The organization reported that 25 journalists are currently imprisoned, while others face constant threats of imprisonment and violence.
In a written statement, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department also called on the Iranian government to stop repressing critics and human rights activists.
