“The execution of the medieval punishment of hand amputation for two prisoners.”

“The execution of the medieval punishment of hand amputation for two prisoners.”

The sentence of amputating four fingers on the right hand of two brothers, Mehrdad and Shahab Teimouri from Sarpol-e Zahab, was carried out early Tuesday morning at Urmia Prison using a guillotine device.

According to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, in addition to these two individuals, five other prisoners — Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Sharafian, Mehdi Shahivand, Kasra Karami, and Morteza Esmaeilian — are also serving sentences at Urmia Prison for similar offenses and face the risk of such punishment.

Based on international human rights principles, particularly human rights conventions, the use of inhumane punishments such as amputation is prohibited. Although Iran has signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, it has not joined the “United Nations Convention Against Torture” and continues to implement amputation as a punishment for certain crimes. This issue has once again raised international concerns regarding the use of severe and inhumane punishments in Iran.
