A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's eastern Flores island early Saturday, leaving at least 20 people dead and several others trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
Emergency crews are racing to reach affected communities as landslides blocked roads and residents fled to higher ground amid fears of a tsunami.
Earlier reports had put the death toll at five, but the number rose as rescue teams reached more remote areas.
Governmental offices, residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and places of worship have been damaged or destroyed all over Flores Island.
Authorities continue search and rescue operations, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
