In 2023, the Islamic Republic of Iran witnessed one of the highest execution rates in the world. According to human rights reports and international organizations, approximately 811 people were executed in Iran during this year. This alarming figure places Iran at the top of the list of countries with the highest number of executions.
These reports indicate that about 70% of all executions worldwide took place in Iran. The executions were mostly carried out for charges such as drug trafficking, murder-related crimes, and security offenses. Many of these executions occurred without fair trials, amid serious concerns about human rights violations, including a lack of transparency in the judicial process, the use of torture, and forced confessions under duress.
Executions in Iran continue to be used as a tool of political and social repression, and critics and human rights activists are calling for an immediate halt to this practice and a review of the legal and judicial approaches of the Islamic Republic.
