Amnesty International reported that the number of executions across the world reached the highest level since 2015 in 2023, with the main reason being the high number of executions in prisons by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The report states that last year, executions increased by 30% and 1,153 people were executed globally, with Iran accounting for 853 of those executions.
The report also mentions that in 2023, the Islamic Republic executed 24 women and 5 juvenile offenders, and most of those executed in Iran were Baloch citizens.
Amnesty International had previously released a special report for 2023, stating that the Islamic Republic further restricted the freedom of expression of the Iranian people and intensified the suppression of women, torture, and executions.
The report systematically assessed the increase in discrimination and violence against ethnic, religious, sexual minorities, and other "marginalized groups".
Amnesty International stated that the leaders of the Islamic Republic use the death penalty as a "tool for political repression", and the number of executions increased in Iran last year, with unfair trials.
