Russian Foreign Ministry: The United States ignores the real causes leading to the arms control crisis
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Saturday that US officials and US representatives continue to "pretend" that the arms control crisis is not linked to Washington's "hostile" policy towards Moscow.
Commenting on the statements of US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Zakharova said: "We note that there were no new major points that would be related to Russia's concerns and take our position into account... We repeat the same old calls to immediately resume cooperation with the United States on limiting armaments, and in particular the development of a new treaty to replace the START treaty, which expires in 2026.
Zakharova added - according to what was reported by the Russian "TASS" news agency - that "although Jake Sullivan tried to wrap these calls in a more attractive package and even set some rewards that were supposed to make them more attractive to Russia, Washington still ignores the reasons that led to the crisis." blatantly hostile (American) policies towards us that eventually became an all-out hybrid war against our country."
According to Zakharova, Russia finds no indications that the United States is willing to abandon its goal of inflicting a "strategic defeat" on Russia and effectively removing it from the international arena as an equal sovereign political actor.
Zakharova stressed that "it would be impossible to separate aspects of arms control from the general political context, as suggested by Jake Sullivan, and no one should have any illusions about referring to the experience of the Cold War, because we have gone through many other things since then, and we have learned a lot." Therefore, we will not allow the repetition of our previous mistakes.
