Italy is investigating the responsibility of the border police for the drowning of 94 migrants
Italian media reported that three Italian border guards are under investigation to determine their responsibility for the sinking of a boat last February, killing more than 90 migrants.
Corriere della Sera newspaper said investigators found "clear irregularities" in the activity log of a speedboat used by Italian border police in their search for the migrant boat.
A surveillance plane operated by the European Union's Frontex agency for the protection of the borders and coasts of the European Union was the first to find the rickety wooden boat on the night of February 25.
As a result, the Italian police deployed two patrols, but the search did not continue due to weather conditions, while the boat carrying migrants did not survive.
The confirmed death toll reached 94 after their bodies were recovered from the sea or after the waves washed them to the beaches, some of them weeks later.
An unspecified number of migrants are believed to be missing.
