French police arrest a Senegalese smuggler who tried to smuggle 32 migrants across the Italian border
French police arrested a smuggler from Senegal at the Mont Jennifer pass located on the Italian-French border in the High Alps, with a truck containing 32 illegal immigrants.
In preliminary investigations, it was found that the accused had received from the migrants between 400 and 600 euros each, to transport them from a route known as illegal crossing between Italy and France.
France 3 said that the French police had arrested the smuggler, who was residing in Italy, and that he would be referred to the prosecution. The migrants also explained that they came from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
According to Amnesty International, the Col de Montgenifrie has been a hotspot for illegal border crossings for five years, and the organization notes that illegal immigrants sometimes use the high-altitude paths there to avoid the police, putting their lives in danger.
She also explained that hundreds of policemen are being mobilized immediately to prevent migrants from entering the territory.
In general, the border between Italy and France is a major immigration problem, and in 2022, nearly 5,000 illegal entries were registered, including more than 600 unaccompanied foreign minors, according to Le Figaro.
