The arrest of a former prime minister in Burundi
Burundi's former prime minister, Alain Guillaume Bunyonyi, who has been wanted in court for several days, has been arrested, the Independent National Commission for Human Rights and a security official said Saturday.
The committee said in a tweet on Twitter that it had paid a visit on Saturday to meet with General Alain Guillaume Bunyoni and indicated that he was in good condition and had not been subjected to any torture or other violations since his arrest.
On Wednesday, Burundian Interior Minister Martin Niteretsi announced in a press conference that Alain Guyon Bunyoni was wanted by the judiciary, noting that several searches were conducted without his being able to be located.
According to Agence France-Presse, a security official said: "In fact, the National Intelligence Service arrested General Bunyoni very quickly."
Bunyonyi has been head of government since June 2020, and President Evarist Ndayishimiye dismissed him from office on September 7, and Interior Minister Jervy Ndirakubuka appointed him in his place.
