White House: We will do everything we can to return Americans held by the Russians
White House national security spokesman John Kirby reiterated Monday that the Biden administration is making every effort to bring back two Americans held in Russia
"We will do everything we can to bring Ivan home," Kirby said - in comments to the US newspaper "The Hill", referring to Ivan Gershkovich, the US journalist for the Wall Street Journal who was indicted last week on charges of... espionage.
“We are doing everything we can to secure the release of Paul Whelan,” Kirby said, referring to a former U.S. Marine who has been held since 2018 on charges of spying for Russia.
"I don't have anything on the specifics of what it really takes to negotiate with the Russians for his release," Kirby said when asked if the United States knew what the Russians wanted in exchange for the two Americans.
Kirby argued that it would take hard work to secure Gershkovich’s release.
