UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has appointed his eldest son Khalid as crown prince of Abu Dhabi, making him the next crown prince to succeed his father.
The UAE's official news agency announced the appointment of Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as crown prince late Wednesday, without giving further details.
After Sheikh Mohammed, 62, also known as MBZ, became president last year, questions were raised about whether he would make one of his brothers his successor.
If he had appointed one of his brothers for the job, there were three expected candidates: Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, the powerful head of national security; Sheikh Mansour, owner of Manchester City Football Club, and Sheikh Abdullah, Foreign Minister of the UAE.
Sheikh Mohammed is likely to concentrate power within his immediate family, as Saudi King Salman has done by granting vast powers to his son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS.
