British farmers are warning of a shortage of some staple foods due to weather conditions
British farmers are warning of a shortage of some staple foods due to weather conditions that have affected agricultural production, the Independent newspaper reported.
First it was tomatoes, now maybe ginger, farmers warn that the supply of the UK-grown crop will run out by next April.
And farmers blame it on high temperatures and low rainfall, followed by a period of cold weather, which led to what farmers described as the toughest season ever.
The Independent explains that some shops have already begun imposing restrictions on the sale of tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables due to lack of imports.
The months of May and June.
Popular British supermarkets such as Tesco and Aldi have allowed only three tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers as a precautionary measure, while Asda stores have also limited lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and berries and cucumbers, lettuce and peppers.
Retailers believe the problem stems from weak production in Europe and North Africa and that supplies will improve in the coming days and weeks.
