Former Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Ali Reza Akbari has been executed on charges of "spying for Britain.
Ali Reza Akbari, an Iranian and British citizen, was executed early Thursday for spying for Britain and acting against Irans national security, state media reported Saturday.
Akbari, who served as deputy defense minister for several years before retiring and was an adviser to Irans nuclear negotiating team, had spied for British intelligence for more than nine years, the intelligence ministry said.
Ali Reza Akbari served as deputy defense minister from 1997 to 2002 and was a close associate of Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani.
